RR Gupta, BB Mahajan, Geeta Garg
January-February 2001, 67(1):28-29
PMID
:17664695
Thirty-one patients with melasma, 4 with superficial post acne scarring and one each with xeroderma pigmentosum and epidermal naevus were studied to know the efficacy of glycolic acid for chemical peeling in varying concentrations and time intervals such as 35% (4 minutes), 52.5% (3 minutes), 70% (2 minutes) at varying intervals upto 6 months. These patients were in the age group of 17-44 years. These patients were followed up regularly. Results showed significant improvement when peeling was done with 52.5% glycolic acid for 3 minutes in melasma, 70% glycolic acid for 2 minutes in superfical post acne scarring.

HIV/AIDS related knowledge, risk perception, attitude and sexual behavior of working women staying in hostels
Arun Kr Sharma, Anita Gupta, OP Aggarwal
January-February 2001, 67(1):21-24
PMID
:17664693
HIV infection poses a formidable threat to women's health. Already, in India, women account for 21.3% of all AIDS cases. In metropolitan cities women living alone in hostels and having independent income, may have a liberal life style and chances of practising high risk sexual behaviour is greater. This study was conducted to assess the risks and risk perception of such women. Among eighty-nine hostel residents, AIDS awareness was 92.1%. Very few respondents had adequate knowledge about modes of transmission and methods of prevention. Risk perception was poor, however high risk behaviour was less commonly practised by this group.

Diagnostic clinical features of atopic dermatitis
Lata Sharma
January-February 2001, 67(1):25-27
PMID
:17664694
Atopic dermatitis is a common disease which varies widely in clinical presentation at different ages and places. Although authors working in western countries on white races have suggested many criteria, there is no uniform set which can be used in large population studies in this part of the world. Hence keeping in mind differences in environment and ethnicity of population, the present study was carried out. Seventy- three patients of atopic dermatitis and 71 age matched controls were studied. All the subjects were examined using a set of 34 potentially useful clinical features selected from different studies, including features for evaluation of photosensitivity. Multiple regression technique was used for analysing the data. It was found that 6 clinical features were diagnostic, 1. presence of itch, 2. history of flexural involvement, 3. history of dry skin, 4. family history of atopy, 5. personal history of diagnosed asthma and 6, visible flexural dermatitis. Photosensitivity was not a significant feature.

Binod K Khaitan, Apra Sood, Kaushal K Verma, M Ramam, Manoj K Singh
January-February 2001, 67(1):46-47
PMID
:17664705
A 26- year- old woman had multiple itchy persistent gradually progressive papular lesions on the forearms and shins for 10 and 4 years respectively. She also noticed similar lesions on both the ears for 4 years. There were no systemic symptoms. Cutaneous examination revealed multiple 2-3 mm discrete firm hyperpigmented papules on the extensors of forearms, shins and earlobes. Skin biopsy from all sites demonstrated deposits of amyloid in the papillary dermis. The patient was treated with cyclophosphamide 50 mg daily orally. There was more than 50% improvement in her lesions.

RR Mittal, Pureet
January-February 2001, 67(1):41-42
PMID
:17664702
Two cases of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome are being reported because of their rarity. Case one was classical with multiple, soft, painful, tender, bleb- like, bluish nodules and gastro- intestinal tract bleeding. In case 2 typical zosteriform, soft bluish, compressible, tender, painful nodules simulating that of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome were present on the right thigh since the age of 14 years. He refused biopsy and therefore it was not possible to exclude other segmental vascular naevi.
