Topical clindamycin hydrochloride 1% in acne vulgaris
Vaswani N Khanna
September-October 1990, 56(5):377-380
Twenty six patients with moderately severe acne were treated for 12 weeks with topical clindamycin hydrochloride 1% (12 patients) and the vehicle (14 patients). A good or excellent reduction was seen in the non-inflammatory acne lesion count in 3 (25%) of the patients on topical clindamycin and in none of the patients who used the vehicle (control). While 9 (75%) of the patients using topical clindamycin hydrochloride showed a good to excellent response in their inflammatory acne lesion count, only 2 (14.29%) of the control group showed a similar response. The response of the non-inflammatory acne to topical clindamycin hydrochloride 1% was comparable to that of the vehicle, (p >0.05) while the response of inflammatory acne lesions to topical clindamycin hydrochloride 1% was superior to that of the vehicle (p <0.05)

Measurement of some biophysical parameters in skin lesions of leprosy
AB Gupta, MA Tutakne, B Haldar
September-October 1990, 56(5):367-370
Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), high frequency electrical conductance (HFC) and the hydration state index (HSI) were measured in sldn lesions of 30 paucibacillary leprosy patients and compared with the contralateral uninvolved skin. While the TEWL, HFC and HSI all showed lower values in the lesion site, as compared to the contralateral skin sites, the differences between the two sets of values significant in HFC and. HSI only at 2% and 1% level respectively. A significant positive correlation (r = 0.69) was found to eidst between these two parameters. The parameters correlate well with the known reduced sweating in skin lesions of TT and BT leprosy and may therefore be considered as good objective parameters to confirm hypohydrosis in suspected skin lesions ofleprosy.

Drugs resistance and penicillinase activity in skin isolated
Staphylococcus aureus
Gopalkrishna Bhat, CN Nagesha, CN Pirvathi, KM Joseph, PG Shivananda
September-October 1990, 56(5):371-374
A study was carried out to evaluate the drug resistance pattern and penicillinase production in skin isolated Staphylococcus aurpus. The disk diffusion method showed prevalence of: multidrug resistance among S. aureus, strains, isolated from locafised skin abscesses. method for detection of penicilfinase could detect this enzyme m 98.60/o of the isolates all fo which were resistant to penicillin and ampicillin. C16xacillin resistance as detected by the agar dilution method was found in 1.4% of the isolates. On the whole cloxacillin and gentamy'cin were found to be the most effective 'antistaphylococcal antibotics.

Oral gugulipid in acne vulgaris management
Jaideep Dogra, Neelam Aneja, VN Saxena
September-October 1990, 56(5):381-383
Gugulipid is the standardized extract of the oleo-resin of Commiphora mukul (Burseraceace) an Indian medicinal plant. The active ingredients are two guggulsterones Z and E. Gugulipid is an effective hypolipidemic agent, has a marked antilipolytic activity in rats. Considering the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris and the pharmacological properties of Gugulipid this trial was initiated. Thirty patients with moderate to severe acne ( Grade 4) were included in this study. Tab Guglip was prescribed in tds dosage for 6 weeks. Excellent, good and moderate response was seen in nine (30%) fourteen (46.66%) and seven (23.33%) patients respectively out of the total thirty. No topical treatment was recommended except for local skin -hygiene. The drug showed excellent tolerance. Only three patients (10%) reported relapse when examined at 3 months follow up.
