Influence of liposomal drug entrapment on the performance of corticosteroid creams |
p. 5 |
GU Rao, RSR Murthy, YS Marfatia, Rajesh Shankar Skin blanching and clinical efficacy of a liposomally entrapped Triamcinolone acetonide (TRMA) cream was compared with that of the conventional TRMA cream in healthy human volunteers and eczema patients respectively. Both the creams showed equal efficacy in eczema patients. A significant reduction in the skin blanching response with the liposomal TRMA cream as compared to the conventional TRMA cream suggests a decrease in the systemic absorption of the corticosteroid with the former. |

Epidemilogical and microbiological correlates of bacterial vaginosis |
p. 8 |
P Bhalla, A Kaushika Female population comprised of 544 with vaginitis and 258 asymptomatic were screened for presence of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida albicans, Gardnerella vaginalis and Mycoplasma hominis. Bacterial vaginosis, diagnosed on the basis of clinical criteria and gram's stained vaginal smear findings, was present in 50 percent of symptomatic cases and 21.8 percent of asymptomatic women. G. vaginalis, M. hominis and T. vaginalis were significantly associated with a diagnosis of BV. BV showed a positive correlation with lower socio-economic status and parity of more than 2. Prevalence of G. vaginalis was significantly higher among women who were ? 33 years of age, had been married for a shorter duration, gave history of intercourse in the preceding 48 hours and were of lower socio-economic status. |

Serum proteins, trace metals and phosphatases in psoriasis |
p. 18 |
M Bhatnagar, A Bapna, AK Khare Serum proteins, zinc, copper, acid phosphatase (AcPase) and alkaline phosphatase (AlPase) were studied in both active and remission phases of psoriasis. Data were compared with healthy controls, ?1, ? and ? globulins were high in active phase while ?1 and ? globulins were at par in remission phase. Serum copper was low but zinc and alkaline phosphatase were significantly high in both active and remission phases of the disease. Acid phosphatase level was at par in all the experimental groups. Study suggests a positive correlation of globulin, zinc and Alpase in active and remission phase of psoriasis. |

Short contact therapy in psoriasis Tar vs Anthralin |
p. 22 |
PK Kar Thirty cases (group I) having psoriasis were studied with a view to assess the efficacy of combination of short contact coal tar therapy, sunrays exposure and short contact anthralin therapy. Results were compared with thirty patients (group II) with psoriasis using anthralin paste as per Ingram technique as control.
The combined short contact therapy in group I patients with intensive 90 to 120 minutes treatment sessions done once in every alternate day resulted in complete clearing in 19 (63.3%) patients, 3 (10%) showed more than 50% clearing of lesions, 6 (20%) had 21-50% improvement of lesions, one (3.3%) had 5-20% improvement and disease got worse in one (3.3%) case. The average rate of clearance of lesions started to appear between 10-22 days with a mean of 16 days.
In group II out of 30 patients using anthralin paste every day, 16 (53.3%) showed complete clearing of lesions, 5 (16.6%) showed more than 50% clearing of lesions, 4 (13.3%) had 21-50% improvement of lesions, two (6.6%) patients had 5-20% improvement of lesions and the disease got worse in 3 (10%) cases. The average rate of clearance of lesions started to appear between 18-28 days with a mean of 23 days.
The combined short contact therapy schedule allows minimal time away from work, decreased hours per week in contact with coal tar and anthralin, decreased cost and a low risk of side effects. |

Tuberculoid leprosy involving hairy scalp:A case report |
p. 41 |
Ashok Ghorpade, Cherukot Ramanan, Pratap Manglani Tuebrculoid leprosy involving the hairy scalp is described. The lesion was single, raised, involved the hairy area of scalp and extended to the surrounding non hairy area also. It is interesting to note that scalp, which is presumed to be immune to leprosy, was singled out by the Mycobacterium leprae, leaving other cooler areas free. To the best of our knowledge such a preferential scalp affliction has not been reported earlier in literature. |
