Dr. V. L. Rege

(28-4-1939 - 09-03-2006)

Goa Medical College and Hospital

Dr. V. L. Rege died at Goa Medical College, Hospital, Bambolim, Goa after a brief illness at the age of 66. He was the leading and seniormost dermatologist of Goa. He passed his MBBS and DVD from Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai. He joined Goa Medical College in 1965, from where he passed his MD. He practically started the department of Dermatology and Venereology in Goa Medical College (GMC). He worked as Assistant Professor and then as Professor and HOD till his retirement from the institution in 1999. Since then he remained busy in private practice in Panaji. During his long tenure of over three decades at GMC, he taught many students who are heads of departments today. He was postgraduate examiner for various universities. He had many publications to his credit in various national and international journals. While working in GMC, he was awarded fellowship to specialize in leprosy in U. S. A. and also worked in Manila for some time. He was instrumental in founding The Goa Association of Dermatologists and was appointed its founder President. Not only was he a wonderful teacher, but also a sincere, honest and warm hearted person. He was liked by his junior colleagues and his students. He made it a point to explain in detail to the student in case of difficulty. He used to spend a lot of time with his patients in the OPD explaining to them about their ailments and what care they should take. He always prescribed affordable medicines as he believed that it is the patient and patient alone whose interest should reigne supreme, always and every time. His demise has been a great loss not only to the entire state of Goa, but also to the neighbouring districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka. A pillar in Goa's medical fraternity has fallen. He will always remain in the hearts of his patients and students.
