A retrospective,data analysis of sexually transmitted diseases was carried out to study the pattern of these diseases prevalent in the region. One thousand'five hundred and seventy,one patients'were seen from January 1977 to October 1985. Maks constituted 95.5% of this group and females the remaining 4.5%. Commonest age group affected was 20-29 years in both sexes. Condytoma acuminata was the commonest STD (21.40/o), followed by gonorrhoea (16.9%), chancroid (12.2%) genital herpes (11.4%), syphilis (10.4%), not'specific ulcers (7.1%), donovanosis (6.3%),mixed infections (5.3%) and NSU (4.1%) Secondary syphilis was the most common (48.6%) presentation of syphik and in women it od 75.8% of all the cases of syphilis. In'more than a quarter of patients, psycho- problems were the reason for attendance.

Nine patients (5 males and 4 females) with lichen amyloidosis were treated with 50 mg cyclophosphamide orally daily for 6 months to 1 year. Itching was decreased by 80 - 90% in all the 9 patients within 4 months, and 4 patients showed 50-75% improvement at the end of,6 months but subsequently there was no further improvement. In the other 3 patients, ,there 'was no change, in the papules during a follow - up of 6 months. The side effects possibly attributable to cyclophosphamide included a reversible leucopenia. Two hundred individuals including 127 apparently normal persons and 73 patients with non-eczematous minor dermatoses were patch tested with 26 commercially available topical antiseptic, anti-bacterial and antifungw preparations. Forty five persons showed 68 positive patch tests, 18 of which were positive for more than one preparation. Males and females showed positive patch test in 23.56 and 83% individuals respectively. Sensitivity to nitrofurazone (furster), benzoic acid, sodium thiosulphate, Multifungin and oxytetracycline (Terramycin) was found in 15 (7.5%), 13 (6.5%). 8 (4%) and 5 (2.5%) persons espectively. The study highlights contact sensitivity to benzoic, sodium thiosulphatc and hamycin for the first time. No person wasn found sensitive to sodium fusidate (Fucidin), gentamicin (Genticyn), toinaftate (Tolnaderm), miconazole (Micogel), clotrimazole (Mycocid), savlon and gentian violet. In view of the possibility of contact sensitivity developing in large number of apparently normal persons (22.50'/o) to a number of commercially available topical preparations, the risk should be weighed against the benefits derived from their use.

Cuteneous leishmaniasis is extremely uncommon in eastren Libya. Seven patients were seen over a period of ten years, of whom 5 had visited areas which are endemic foci, while 2 were foreign nationals. Rifiimpicin was effective in 3 patients while it was a failure in 2. Metronidazole was used in 2 patients with success, while one patient responded to co-trimoxazole.

Thirty (88.2%) out of 34 children with skin lesions were observed during the recent epidemic of meningococcus group A infection in Delhi. Purpuric lesions were the commonest (60%), maculo-papular in 26-67% and faint pink macules'm 13.33% Conjunctivae were affected m 3. These eruptions appeared within 6 hours: ulcers and gangrene appeared after 7 days in one child. Severe vascular damage was seen on histoplthology of the ulcers as compared to the early lesions. Gangrene of the extremities developed during the recovery phase when all other signs of the disease had subsided.

Results of patch tests obtained with 24 hour and 48 hour occlusion periods using antigen impregnated-discs' (AID) and antigen-containing-saucers(ACS) were studied in 168 patients. Of the 411 patches appr, 4 the results in 400 (97.3210/o) patch tests were concordant (91 positive and 309 negative reactions with both the 24 hour and the 48 hour occlusions tests), while 10 patch test reactions were positive only with 48 hour occlusion, and 1 patch test reaction were positive only With 24 hour occlusion. Of the 91 patch test reactions positive with both the 24 hour and the 48 hour occlusion tests, 81 patch test reactions were equally severe, while 10 patch test reactions were stronger with the 48 hour occlusion test. The discordant reactions were obtained with Lantana camera (3), inerium variabilis (4), Allium cepa (1), and potassium dichromate. (1), while concordant results were found with Parthenium hysterophorus, Calotropis procera, Argemone me)acana, nitrofurazone, neomycin, nickel sulphate an paraphenyl-nediamine. A case of phaeohyphomycosis in a three-year-old female child born to consanguineous parents is reported. The causative agent was Exophiala jmmlmei. The lesions were found in skin, subcutaneous tissue, lymph nodes and limb bones, which makes it a rare case.

Ninety two episodes of gonococcal urethritis treated with one of the following regimens viz: (A) 3 m. u. of fortified procaine penicillin made by adding 1 m.u. of crystalline penicillin to 2 m.u. of fortified procaine penicillin intramuscularly with one gram of probenecid orally, (B) 3 m.u. of above fortified procaine penicillin intramuscularly alone, and (C) 400 mg single oral dose of doxycycline produced success rates of 95,76.2 and 66.7% respectively. Post gonococcal urethritis was detected in 37% patients. Thirty four (45.94%) of the 74 isolates of N. gonorrhoeae were relatively resistant (MIC 0. 12 units ml) to penicillin. None of the 74 Neisseria gonorrhoeac strains was beta lactamase producing.

Sixty untreated patients of gonorr ioea were subjected to clinico- bacteriological study with special reference to betalactamase producing strains. Unilateral epididymitis was observed in 2 and multiple peri-urethral abscesses were found in 1. One male patient was asymptomatic. One strain of gonococcus isolated from an unmarried male patient showed resistance to 10 IU penicillin disc and positive rapid iodometric test for beta-lactamase enzyme.

In a study undertaken to find out the usefulness of 'Desensol' patch test kit to detect contact allergens, in 200 cases revealed 24 cases with negative patch test with all the antigens and 55 cases reacted to even the Vaseline control. -Excluding these 79 cases, the common contact allergens were potassium bichr6ma,te, (40.49%), TMTD(28.92%), PPD(24.79%), epoxy resin (23.14%), colophony (19.0%), nickel sulfate (19.0%), Framycetin (19.0%) and nitrofurazone (19.0%). Desensol patch test kit is lacking in certain antigens while in our country due to varied environmental factors and social customs, a person is exposed to a large number of natural and man-made contact allergens. So usefulness of such a kit like. Desensol is limited.

In a study of 23 cases of Behcet's disease, we found male prepondrance (males 82.6%, females 17.4%) with commonest age of onset between 21-30 years in 70% cases. During the course of the disease, recurrent oro- genital ulcers were noticed in all the cases, nodosum in 5 and thrombophlebi7tis in 4), eye .involvement' in 10, joint involvement in 6, .0pididmitis in 2 cases and deep vein thrombosis, CNS involvement and oesophaga ulcers in one case each were also seen. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was raised between 35 and 120 mm during the active, phase of the disease. In 15 cases, treatment with oral predisolone controlled all the manifestations while treatment with colchicine, relieved oro-genital and skin lesions in 7 patients. One patient with eye involvement and recurrent oesophageal ulcers improved well with a combination of prednisolone and cyclophosphamide. Progressive deterioration of vision was noticed in 2 patients in spite of regular treatment.
