To evaluate the suitability of some chemicals to act as bases for antigens for patch tests, patch tests were performed with these agents in patients having contact dermatitis. Propylene glycol'used as such produced positive reactions in 25 (50%) patients of which 12 were 2 + or more, polyethylene glycol 200 produced positive reactions in 9 (18%) cases of which 4 cases were 2 + or more, a mixture of liquid paraffin and hard paraffin gave rise to positive reactions in 10 (10%) cases 3 of these being 2 +, a mixture of liquid paraffin and bees wax was positive in 14 (14,Yo) cases 3 of these being 2 +, yellow petrolatum was positive in 4 (8%) cases, one of which was 2 +, white petrolatum was positive in S (6%) cases all of these being + reactions only, and glycerol gave rise to a I + reaction in only one (2%) caw. In tropical countries, water should be as base for as many antigens as possible for others, a control test with the b must be included.

Two hundred and seven patients (151 males and 56 females) were patch tested with a battery of plants, potassium dichromate and formaldehyde. Sensitivity to Parthenium hysterophorus. Nerium indicum, Calotropis procera, Eucalyptus sp and Mangifera indica was found in 60.87, 23.64, 15.46 andl2.08% patients respectively. One hundred and twenty six patients (92 males and 34 females ) including five teenage girls and one 13 years old child had parthenium dermatitis. Majority (74.60%) were between 30 to 59 years of age. Dermatitis involving face especially eyelids, neck, cubital and popliteal fossae was the common (82.54%) mode of presentation. Photosensitive pattern was seen in 9.51% and chronic lichenification of extremities in the remaining 7.97% patients Parthenium dermatitis was seen more frequently in city dwellers, while farmers constituted only 20.7% of all cases. There was frequent patch test positivity to potassium dichromate (24.i5%) and formaline (28.02%) in the present patients.

Grey hairs obtained from patients having premature grey hairs were exposed to UVA or UVB for 30 mmutes daily for 17 days and another group of grey hairs were first daily painted with 1% aqueous solution of psoralen and then exposed to UVA for 30 minutes for 17 days. The skin furface pH of 55 brown-skinned individuals (Indians) comprising of 30 males and 25 females in the age range 12-58 years has been measured at the forehead (FH) and the back of the wrist (BW). The mean values of skin pH at FH and BW are 5.51 + 0.32 and 5.56 + 0.40 respectively for male. The corresponding female values are 5.73 + 0.032 and 5.84 + 0.28 statistical analysis of the data shows that (i) the dependence of skin surface pH on age is not significant, (ii) the male skin is slightly, but significantly more acidic than the female one, (iii) the mean values of skin pH at forehead and at back of the wrist do not differ significantly for male ; the difference however is significant for female at 5% level, (iv) there exists a significant positive correlation ( r=0.77 for male and r + 0.71 for female) between the pH’s of the forehead (x2) and the back of the wrist (z3). The regression equation of x2 on x3 are: x2= 2.13+0.61 for male and x2=1.05 + 0.80x3 for female.
