Dermatophytoses in Davangere

A clwco- mycological study of 130 cases of dermatophytoses undertaken during a period of I year is reported. The age and sex incidence, the clinical varieties. land the seasonal variations are analysed. The infection was predominantly seen in the age group of 11-50 years. Men were more commonly affected. Tinea glabrosa (89.249o) was the commonest clinical type encountered, followed by tinea capitis (6.93%). AR the cases were positive by direct microscopic examination and the different species of dermatophytes isolated from 66 out of 130 patients by culture, are analysed. Trichophyton rubrum was the predominant species (81.820/o) isolated and the other species isolated were E.floccosum (9.09%). T violaceum (4.54%), M. audouini (3.03%) and T.mantagrophytes (1.51%).

Hyperba Oxygen Therapy and Non Healing Ulcers

3 cases of non-healing ulcers refractory to conventional therapy were treated with hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) at 2.5. atmospheric pressure (ATA) for 90 minutes daily 6 days per week to a total of 30 to 36 exposures. HBO when given as an adjunct to conventional, treatment was found effective in quick healing and obtaining sterile culture.

Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia with Mitral Valve Prolapse

Clinical and investigational features of a case of congenital hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in a young boy are described. In addition, he was found to have mitral valve prolapse, which was confirmed by echocardiography. The available literature is discussed. Study of Neurodermatitis Circumscripta Patients with Psychological Tests

2.54 percent of patients attending the dermatology clinic were found to have neurodermatitis circumscripta. Twenty adult male patients with the disease who were p educated at least u to high school were p subjected to detailed psychological testing. They were administered 10 cards of TAT Sinha's anxiety scale,- self-rating depression scale of Zung and Wechsler adult intelligence scale tests. AU the patients were found to have high IO levels. Anxiety of a very high degree was observed in 55.8 percent of the patients. Anxiety levels were high in patients who were eldest in the family. Sixty five per cent of patients showed high degree of depression, which was more apparent in the younger age group. Patients with first and second ordinal position were more depressed. No relationship was found between the disease and the financial and cdcational status, duration and extent of disease and 1.Q., anxiety or depression levels. Need (n) affifiation and (n) achievement were the two most dominant needs expressed.

Actinomycetoma Due To Nocardia Brasiliensis in Tamil Nadu

Two cases of actinomycetoma caused by Nocardia Brasiliensis in Tamilians are reported. Both presented with multiple sinuses discharging serosanguinous material without any granules. In the first case, the lesion was located in the thigh and leg and the specific diagnosis was made by histopathology and isolation of N. brasiliensis. In the other, in addition to thigh and leg, the foot was also affected and the causative agent was isolated in pure culture. The geographic distribution of the organism and its incidence and prevalence are discussed.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Discoid Lupus Erythematosus

A case of Squamous cell Carcinoma arising in discoid lupus erythematosus of 10 years duration is described. The constant exposure to U-V rays in sunlight, in addition to the chronic hypoxidosis in the scar resulting from chronic discoid iupus erythematosus, is assumed to induce malignant degeneration.
