Local medications are important in any dermatological prescription. For optimum results at reasonable cost such medications are best,' tailor made.' Absolute dependence on commercially available preparations severely restricts the freedom, of the practicing dermatologist. Working knowledge of Cosmetically elegant and therapeutically useful ointment bases are therefore useful for all of us. The varieties of such bases with details of making them locally by self or under guidance are described and their advantages and disadvantages compared.

Twenty-five cases of exfoliative dermatitis (21 males and 4 females) were selected at random for study. in addition to routine history and clinical examination, investigations like histopathology of skin and lymphnodes, peripheral blood smear for abnormal cells and bone narrow examinations were done. Etiologically, the cases could be classified into three categories namely exfoliation in pre-existing dermatoses, drug incluced exfoliation and idiopathic exfoliation. One case showed abnormal monocytoid cells (Sezary cell) in peripheral blood smear.

Fusarium solani, not known to produce onychomycosis, was repeatedly recovered trom two healthy men with'Iesions in fingernails. Mycelial fragments and microconidia were observed in the diseased nails and the fungus was repeatedly isolated in the cyclo-heximide-free culture medium. The report indicates that many fungi, hitherto considered nonpathogens may still be able to colonize a variety of human tissues.

Sub-populations of lymphocytes and serum immunoglobulins were studied in 50 patients with psoriasis. Absolute T lymphocyte count was found to be significantly decreased. Though the null cells showed an increase, absolute B Lymphocyte count was normal. The decrease in T cells was found to be directly proportional to the extent of cutaneous involvement. Quantititive estimations of serum IgA and IgM were as IgO was found,to bc raised. The possible mechanism of these changes in psoriasis has been discussed.

Dermatoglyphic patterns and total ridge count were sutdied in 100 random selected Indian Army Personnel of mixed Indian population. They include 25 males each of controls, psoriasis, alopecia areata and vitiligo. Increase in the loops and decrease in whorls were significant in psoriasis. In alopecia areata there was significant increase in whorls and decrease in arch patterns. Radial loops and arches were completely absent on right hands.In vitiligo there were maximum ulnar loopover third and fifth digits of each hand and radial loops were completely absent over digits of left hand. No significant change was observed in total ridge count in these three dermatoses.

Factors relating to default among 100 health educated and 63 uneducated patients with gonorrhoea were studied. Default was not significantly associated with age, marital status or level of education. Repeaters were not particularly more prone to default than non-repeaters. Health education did not significantly influence default. Default was significantly low (p.001) among a small group of patients with concomitant diseases detected at the initial or follow - up visits. A high incidence of trichomoniasis (14.5%) in the present study detected in the follow-up period emphasizes the need for thorough clinical and laboratory examination at each follow up visit.

Three cases of lupus vulgaris developing at the site of BCG vaccination are reported. All the patients had lesions starting before the age of 15 years. Clinically and histologically the lesions 'were indistinguishable from spontaneous lupus vulgarism Treatment with streptomycin and isonicotinic acid hydrazide for 1 year produced complete resolution of lesions.
