To find out the incidence of contact hypersensitivity due to various antibacterial agents, patch tests were performed with these medications in 101 patients suspected to havek developed contact dermatitis due to some such agent. Positive patch tests were obtained with nitrofurazone, (furacin) in 56 cases, neomycin in 28 cases penicillin in 12 cases, tyrothricin (tyroderm), gentamicin (genticyn), framycitin (soframycin) and oxytetracycline (terramycin) in 13 cases each, triple sulfa , and mercurochrome in 9 cases each and acriflavine in 4 cases. Two cases showed patch tests with brilliant green, but none with gentian violet. Twenty eight patients were negative with all drugs tested. Many patients showed positive patch tests with more than one antibacterial agent.Neomycin 20% in petrolatum gave more frequent positive patch tests compared to the commericial 0.35% neomycin ointment or 20% aqueous neomycin, but there was no significant difference between the commercial 0.2% nitrofurazone ointment, 2% nitrofurazone in petrolatum of 22 controls, 6 patients showed positive patch tests with the commercial neomycin ointment as well as 20% neomycin in petrolatum, 1 patient with 0.2% nitrofurazone ointment and 5 patients with 200% nitrofurzone in petrolatum .

Thirty three patients suffering from psoriasis took part in PUVASOL treatment study. All the patients were exposed to sunrays 4 times a week between 11-30 a.m. and 1-30 p.m. two hours after ingesting 8-MOP. The initial exposure was for 15 minutes. Quantitative Porphyrins in blood urine and stools of 30 patients with psoriasis had been' compared with that of 10 normal controls. Porphyrin levels have also been compared in psoriitic patients with and without history o I f photosensitivity, The erythrocyte coproporphyrin levels in patients, with photosensitivity were higher than that in patients without photosensitivity, and, this rise, was statistically significant. In a purely clinical unbiased study, fifty patients' with multifocal extensive, vitiligo were given oral clofazimine therapy for six months and another fifty patients were kept as controls. All the patients were exposed to sunrays for thirty minutes daily. Significantly more patients in the treated group developed pigmentation of the patches compared to the, control group. But,the pigment dis appeared soon after stopping the treatment. It may be tried in extensive multifocal vitiligo cases only where known therapeutic agents are not effective.

A total of 80 cases comprising of 40 controls and twenty each of ichthyosis and alopecia areata were studied for dermatoglyphic patterns and ridge count. Statistically significant increased incidence of whorl pattern was observed in female cases of autosomal dominant and sex linked ichthyosis. A double blind study with systemic psoralen and sunlight exposure therapy in psoralen and is reported. Evaluation was done on the basis of clinical features, patients subjective improvement, severity of scores and histopathology. 66.7% of patients on systemic psoralen and sunlight responded with complete clearance of lesions in 21 to 56 days and 33.3% of patients showed moderate improvement. This study shows that systemic psoralen and direct sunlight elwsure is a safe and effective line of t reatment for psoriasis. We feel, this method of treatment can be recomended as a routine in psoriatic patients in our country.

A comparative study of the effectiveness of 8-methoxypsoralen and 4,5,8-trimethylpsoralen 'm the treatment of psoriasis revealed that when taken orally in 20 and 10 mg. doses respectively, and 2 hours later lesions exposed to natural sunlight, remission was achieved within 8 weeks. Progressive improvement among patients was variable. Effectiveness of both drugs was comparable, and the difference was insignificant. Drug 4,5,8 trimethylpsoralen achieved equal remission at half the dosage, and for this reason its use is advocated. Failure of the drugs in 2 patients and recurrence in 1, points out the limitations of this method of treatment.
